WORSENING WILDFIRES
To visualize data about wildfires on this set of climate catalog cards, I used a dragon as a visual metaphor—threatening, hungry, and not easily defeated. Worsening wildfires, however, are no fantasy.

PROCESS
I wanted a dragon that looked like a forest on fire. My visual research started broad, with various reptiles and birds. I found the bearded vulture and flying fox to be the most suitable references, given their red and brown coats and predatory builds. I drew various head and neck variations, pushing and pulling characteristics of snakes, birds, and lizards. The final design’s eye and mouth positions are bird-like but it has a more lizard-like snout and brow structure. The dragon is adorned with charred brown horns and rigid quills lining its neck and back like a broken stick.
