TRICK OR TREAT

King Kong and the New York go together like Halloween and fall. In this hypothetical fall edition cover for The New Yorker, I imagine a whimsical scene where King Kong joins in on the season’s festivity.
THUMBNAILS

When I think of New York in fall, I first think of the gorgeous leaves changing in Central Park, the warmth of a picnic, the wind between buildings, the fashion, and the feeling of walking the streets bundled up with a hot coffee. I aimed for a spontenous and painterly style, making colored roughs to explore these ideas.

I felt an itch to do something more playful, and with Halloween approaching, thought it would be funny if New York’s most famous monster was included.
COLOR KEYS

I wanted the colors to evoke fall, so I played with color schemes that centered around orange and brown. I really liked the intensity of sunset lighting and the drama of having the Empire State Building cast a shadow on King Kong. Since this illustration is ultimately about New York and fall, I went with a recognizable Kong design.
